An Indian-born doctor, temporarily prevented from practicing in Britain by the General Medical Council (GMC), has been allowed to resume work after showing his willingness to improve.
Arun Rauniar, a GP, was banned after it emerged that he had prescribed wrong drugs and performed operations he was not qualified for. It led to furious former patients urging the GMC to strike the foreign doctor off for good, the Sun reported.
In one case, he wrongly gave a woman who had suffered a minor stroke powerful anti-dementia pills which her family claim hastened her death. He also did operations such as circumcisions at his clinic in Leyton in east London.
Rauniar, of nearby Ilford town, was first suspended in 2007 and again in 2010 after he did not show enough improvement.
In 2008, he was asked to sit basic-level medical exams in clinical problem solving and judgment. He scored just 381 while he required 480 to pass.
He appealed against the second suspension at the High Court. His case was rejected. He is, however, back at work in a different practice in Leyton area under supervision.
According to the General Medical Council, Rauniar could work again after taking a "refresher" course and be under another doctor's eye. The watchdog is said to have felt impressed by his willingness to try again.
